UK government rationalises websites

BBC NEWS | Government to close 551 websites (11 Jan 07)

Hundreds of government websites are to be shut down “to make access to information easier” for people. Of 951 sites, only 26 will definitely stay, 551 will definitely close and hundreds more are expected to follow.

If done well, this should be a good thing. “About £9m a year was expected to be saved over three years by cutting back on “vanity” sites that do not serve a useful purpose.” A complete list of the cull can be found here, some seem important but I think the fact that they are going doesn’t mean that all the info is going… if it’s still useful I think it’s been centralised.
